"In the Future to Come" [watch the video]

Shot: 1983

Location: Sweden

Director: ?
Available on: ?
.

EUROPE's first official music video and the only music video to feature the band's original drummer, Tony Reno. The band plays in a white, desert-like area with a strong wind blowing against them. The performance is mixed with footage of rocket launching, explosions and a burning peace sign flag. It was apparently only shown once on Japanese TV in 1983, and nowadays the band prefers that it stays that way. "You just laugh at that one," Joey Tempest said, "It's just us running around in snow, which was actually soap flakes! At one point, two of us knocked each other in the head and that part remained in the video."

"The Final Countdown" [watch the video]

Shot: May 25-26, 1986

Location: Solnahallen in Solna, Sweden

Director: Nick Morris
Available on: The Final Countdown [VHS] (1987),
Rock the Night: Collectors Edition [DVD] (2004)

EUROPE's biggest hit and one of the most popular videos on MTV in the 80s. Solnahallen is the venue for a televised, explosive performance. Footage of Swedish landscape and the band receiving gold records is also included. The video was shot partly during the concerts EUROPE did at Solnahallen on May 25 and 26, 1986, and partly during the soundcheck for these concerts. This was the last video EUROPE did with John Norum before he left in November 1986.

Alternative versions: According to some fans, there are alternative versions of this video. One of them said he saw a video with the whole album version of the song, instead of the edited version used in the standard video. There were longer scenes with the band on the roof of Solnahallen, at one point the screen was divided into five screens, each showing a band member, and in some scenes Joey wore the same jacket that he used in the "Carrie" video. I haven't seen this version myself, though.

This video is completely different from the standard version and consists of footage from the Swedish 1985 film On the Loose. EUROPE starred in that film and the soundtrack was written by Joey Tempest. The plot of both the film and the music video evolves around a young man's jealousy towards his girlfriend's past relationship with Joey.

Shot: November 18, 1986

Location: Hard Rock Cafe in Stockholm, Sweden

Director: Nick Morris
Available on: The Final Countdown [VHS] (1987),
Rock the Night: Collectors Edition [DVD] (2004)

EUROPE's tour bus stops outside the Hard Rock Cafe in Stockholm, and the band walks into the cafe, only to see a concert video of themselves on the TV screens. This inspires them to rock the house live, much to the surprise of the guests and workers. "'Rock the Night' was one of the most fun ones," Ian Haugland said, "We invited a lot of people, extras, just to be there. There were a lot of people there and we were having a good time. It was more like having a party than doing a video shoot." The scenes at Hard Rock Cafe were shot on November 18, 1986 and the video marked Kee Marcello's debut as a EUROPE member, although live footage with John Norum was included too. Those clips are taken from the concerts at Solnahallen on May 25 and 26, 1986.

The band plays in a dark room with spotlights. "'Carrie' was really simple to do," Ian said, "We just set up the stuff in this big TV studio and it was totally dark. We did a couple of takes and that was it. It was nice and very quick." The blonde girl who is shown during the choruses is the Swedish model Sanna, who also appeared as a waitress in the "Rock the Night" video. "She was a nice girl," Joey said, "Her boyfriend came to pick her up after the video shoot and he looked a bit jealous with all these rockers around."

.

An archeologist brings his wife to a desert area to learn more about the Native Americans, only to witness a hard-fought, fiery battle between ghosts of Native Americans and US cavalry. Meanwhile, the band sees it all from the top of the mountains. The video was shot in the Sierra Nevada in September 1987, a half mile from where Sergio Leone shot the famous Clint Eastwood spaghetti western A Fistful of Dollars. When filming the scene where the horses ran through the valley, someone accidentally set a brush near the set on fire. The entire video crew, including band members, had to fight the fire by quickly digging a road that the fire could not bridge.

Director: Nick Morris

This video was shot at an old castle in New York, and has a spooky and mysterious atmosphere. The video is filled with explosions and thunder. "I remember we had this big explosion on the back of the drum kit, a real gasoline explosion," Ian said, "It was almost burning up my back." While the band plays, a mysterious woman walks through the corridors of the castle. "We had this body painted girl in the video. The makeup artists painted her body exactly like the background to make it look like the shape of her body, but it looked exactly like the background. Nice stuff."

Location: Arab World Institute in Paris, France

Director: Nick Morris

.

This video's intro shows many people, each with their own thoughts and wishes ("I want to learn how to fly", "I want to be loved", "I want to be rich", "I'd just rather be forgotten"...) After that, EUROPE plays in a dark room, while footage is shown of Julie and Jimmy, who are going through some tough times after their break-up.

Alternative versions: I've seen two versions of this video, but the only difference occurs during the "Got a picture of Jimmy..." line. In one version you can see Joey singing this line, and in the other version footage of Jimmy sitting in a cab is shown instead. The second version is the one that's included on the Rock the Night: Collectors Edition DVD.

The power of the band's performance at The Marquee is amplified by having three guitarists on stage: Joey, Kee and Mic. In the end a woman gets up on stage to dance with Joey. "We had a lot of fun," Mic Michaeli said in an interview with Kerrang!, "It was announced on Capital Radio and a few fans came down to take part. If I look back I think that all our best videos have been the ones where we just play onstage without any stupid storylines, and 'Halfway to Heaven' goes along with that. We didn't get to play live, but we did get to stand on the famous Marquee stage!" This was the last music video EUROPE filmed before going on hiatus later that year.

Director: Bruce McKenna

This video is basically a montage of video clips from New Year's Eve parties from the 1920s to 1990s, as well as a man running in the streets to get to a party. As the decades change, the man changes accordingly, going from a 70s disco dancer with a white suit and afro to a long-haired 80s rocker dressed in leather. The only EUROPE related appearances in this video are a short clip from the "The Final Countdown" music video and Joey Tempest standing outside Club EUROPE in 1999 to greet the running man.

Along with the return of John Norum, came EUROPE's first true music video in 12 years. Scenes from the Ghost Rider motorcycle stunt movies are combined with raw, shaky footage of the band rocking out in a garage. The bridge introduces a colorful collage of video clips from EUROPE's career in the 80s and 90s.

Alternative versions: There is a "behind the scenes" video, which is a mix of footage from the video shoot and the photo session for the album cover. That video is edited and produced by one of EUROPE's main photographers, Michael Johansson.

This tribute to Thin Lizzy's frontman, Phil Lynott, was given a nostalgic video that recreates scenes of teenaged band members who are dreaming of becoming rock stars. The live scenes are taken from EUROPE's concert at Hovet in Stockholm on October 21, 2004. Two notable guest appearances in the video are made by Marcus Michaeli and Simon Haugland, sons of Mic and Ian.
